Oh and we may well need that extra creativity once he leaves like you were suggesting Meshaal.

We now need creative midfielder, defensive midfielder and striker/wide player. This summer just got a lot more complicated

I'm keeping myself amused by watching Piers Morgan having an absolute meltdown about this on Twitter

Mario Leontiou wrote:Total lack of class with that statement, making it harder for us to progress forward by questioning the club out in the open. He did it to help justify his move to Man City and try and preserve his reputation.
If he 'loved' the club he would have left quietly. Maybe make a statement about not renewing and leaving it there. But no. This was all about him and a way out for him. I pray the club tell City and any other English club to fuck off and tell RVP to like it or lump it. Go Spain and join Valencia or something (the top 2 aren't interested) or go Juventus.
Nail on the head. Selfish statement - if he cared, he would keep quiet and press for a move behind closed doors. I know some fans may appreciate his honesty, but this puts us in a worse position selling wise. We'd do well to get even 15m for him now. Very, very disappointing. I'm sure his dad and wife are not happy with the decision either.
It makes the signings of Podolski and Giroud come off as defensive rather than progressive. We'll need a top class player to really replace him, but I don't think we'll get one. It also explains why Chamakh is still fucking around - and is now likely to be around for a while longer.
I say keep him. If he's a professional he'll play for us. If not then he's still a better backup to Giroud than Chamakh. Having him around is worth more than the 10-12m we'd get by selling him (if we were offered 20m on the other hand, I'd sell).
If we get 20m+, let him go. Let him go to Man City where he'll win a meaningless trophy before being relegated to the bench when the next big thing comes and takes his place. Or let him to go Real Madrid where he'll play a bit part role out of position. Or even Juventus, where he may be a starter but nobody will care because Italian football is folding in on itself.
Frankly this is a really stupid decision by him. There is nowhere he can go where he'll be as loved and wanted as much as Arsenal, and for as long as Arsenal. This is not like Cesc, or like Nasri. He's in a weak position.
---
Enough about him, how do we replace him? It'd be nice to get a really top class striker in, but I don't see it happening. I'd love a Falcao, or if we can bring in a Cavani then RVP will be forgotten in an instant. It's unlikely, but one can hope. Even if we don't bring in another striker, if we conclude M'Vila and bring in an AM with goals in them (wish we could've got Kagawa) then we've still got a solid team.

Good post Zaid.
Still don't see us signing a striker to replace him, but we could do with an attacking mid-fielder as well as a defensive mid-fielder now.

My mate text me, lets get M'Vila know and break his leg...dont quite echo that but making this team more solid now is a must. Anyone thinking we will buy three strikers this summer is mad, we wont.

Re: The Van Persie Thread
It's increasingly clear that Giroud IS the replacement for RVP. I'm sure he told them before the Euros that he would not renew. So we go out and sign a striker which we've had our eye on. Don't see another one coming in then.
Need another goalscorer to share the burden, and I don't see Podolski as that - he's more a replacement for Arshavin.

Well, if Podolski is considered a winger then maybe another striker can come in. But I agree, it's highly unlikely.
Giroud and Chamakh, oooh how scary.

Re: The Van Persie Thread
Maybe he's just doing A "Rooney" Says he wants to leave so the club offer him a better deal to stay. It seems strange that he makes this statement within days after Wenger and Hill wood say hes going no where?

Re: The Van Persie Thread
Arsenal Football Club has issued the following statement with regard to Robin van Persie's future:
"

We have to respect Robin's decision not to renew his contract. Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the Club.
"We are planning with ambition and confidence for next season with Arsenal's best interests in mind."

Re: The Van Persie Thread
Guys it over. He is gone. The club just released a statement saying they respect his decision and expect him to finish out his contract next season. Now correct me here, but that means he will leave on a free right?
If thats the case, i dont like it. Sell him right now, before he causes his value to go down anymore than it already has with the statement....and what kind of dressing will we have where everyone knows a player is there (our captain!) who doesnt really want to be a part of the Arsenal anymore?

Re: The Van Persie Thread
Funny how things shift on a dime. I guess that meeting in May really didn't go well and there was a reason Wenger asked him to keep quiet- haha.
I echo what Mario said. Very self serving of him to put out this statement.
It takes any leverage out of our hands. I think the clubs he wanted to go to Juventus, Barca, Real, weren't biting at 20+m, so this is giving them a huge discount.
Things have been in the works for a while it is no coincidence that Juve just came in with what seems like a ridiculously low bid. I say sit him for the year

Even if he stays, he's hardly likely to be captain next year. Most will call for it to go to Vermaelen, and since he's VC right now (right?), I'd go with that. Shame.

Re: The Van Persie Thread
On the other hand if we don't sell him and relegate him to the bench for the next season, he can kiss goodbye to any ambition he might have of going to a bigger club. So it's kind of a big risk on his part.
Re: The Van Persie Thread
"..........., but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward. "
This is the line that gets me, because it stings. It had a lot to do with why Cesc wanted to go and also why Nasri left.
Buying Gervinho didn't convince Nasri to stay, even though he had said Gerry was his favourite player in Ligue 1.. Then Nasri had quotes about dead weight collecting paychecks.
I can imagine RVP's meeting in May went something like:
"why didn't you spend more and get Mata" "too expensive, Wilshire is here, we got Arteta instead."
Why didn't you spend more and get Hazard" ,"we got Podolski instead." When you create the reputation as a second choice, second tier club .....

Re: The Van Persie Thread
whether Robin renews his contract or not within the next year is a different story, class players come and go. but what bothers me is the constant change in the captaincy/leader of the team every year or two. very unsettling for the team imo.

Gutted...absolutely gutted....
Maybe in one way it's a blessing in disguise....we got very lucky last season in keeping him fit for so long...
Where would we have been without his goals....

There you go....
No talk of contract would have probably even been mentioned if he had been unfit and not chipped in a small amount of goals....
I think the only way he would stay is if we tasted success....
I say sell him...get 20+ for him and spend that on a class midfielder...or straight replacement striker...
