Re: Reserves / Youth Thread
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has demoted flop forwards Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-Young to the reserve team for tonight's second string clash with West Brom, with a selection of scouts set to run the rule over the out-of-favour duo.
It's the second time in under a month that Wenger has dropped both Chamakh and Chu-Young into the reserve ranks, having made them slug it out alongside Andrey Arshavin and Yossi Benayoun against Norwich City's teenagers in late February, with a 5-0 win helping rejuvenate the form of Benayoun, leading to successive first-team starts against Tottenham and Liverpool.
Wenger now hopes a second reserve appearance can do the same for Chamakh and Chu-Young, who have managed just two goals between them all season, and failed to offer any competition to captain Robin van Persie.
Arsenal are expected to listen to offers for the pair in the summer, and will give a host of scouts from all over Europe a chance to look at what they can offer tonight, with representatives from Fulham, Anderlecht and Monaco among those in attendance.
Metro also understands that fellow first-team players Andre Santos, Johan Djourou and Carl Jenkinson will also be on second string duty, as they bid to boost fitness having missed large parts of the season through injury.
Santos, a £10 million buy from Fenerbahce in the summer, will make his first appearance of 2012, having missed the last three months following ankle surgery, in a bid to be ready for the final run in.
Djourou and Jenkinson are looking to maintain their fitness having recently returned from knocks, with Arsenal not in action against Everton for another week, meaning match minutes are hard to come by.
On top of the experienced players in action, Wenger will also personally attend the fixture to check on teenagers Ignasi Miquel, Nico Yennaris and Oguzhan Ozyakup, with all three set to be loaned or promoted to the first-team next season.
The Frenchman will also get a glimpse of 16-year-old winger Serge Gnabry, a German Under-17 international, who has already trained with the first-team, and is rated as one of the most exciting talents in the Arsenal Academy.
The fixture kicks off at 7pm, at Barnet's Underhill Stadium.

I expect we will be seeing a stronger reserve team from now until the end of the season to get some players some minutes/shop window time.

Maybe it's a change in philosophy? a reserve stint helped Benayoun out and so getting a competitive game from our fringe players each week might not be the worst idea in the world. Will also help our reserves with a bit of experience instead of basically playing our U21 side

Re: Reserves / Youth Thread
With so many players out on loan it can't hurt. I wouldn't really see the point of it if we did this all season as it would end up restricting the development of young players which is what the reserves are there for but here and there, maybe once a month, I think can only be a good thing.
This will probably the last time we send out a team like this, anyway. We only have 4 reserve games left, next week we have one a day before Everton, so that will see an entirely youth side. And the next two are in April, one a day after QPR (that may see those who didn't make the squad play) and then the 10th which is one day before Wolves away.

Chamakh failed to score the last time against Norwich reserves. I hope he does today, it has been really sad seeing him capitulate from the player who first came to us to what he's become now.
Re: Reserves / Youth Thread
Didn't know where else to put this, but I thought it was pretty cool. I knew Jenkinson was a Gooner but didn't realize how big!

Re: Reserves / Youth Thread
I know I may be in the minority here, but I really believe that if we give Park a chance in the first team he will prove he is good enough to be our 3rd striker. Every game he starts, he scores, whether it is for the first team (vs bolton), his national side, or the reserves.

Re: Reserves / Youth Thread
I went to the Reserves game tonight and it was a 3-0 win. Park, Gnarbry, and Aneke the goalscorers.
A few titbits... Chamakh is finished at Arsenal. No confidence whatsoever, and virtually nothing he tried came off. Feel really sorry for the bloke after he had such a good start. Park took his goal well and looked decent, it's a shame that his first team chances are virtually non-existent. Aneke is a beast in central midfield, and I'd like to see him starting the Carling Cup games next season. Really powerful and scored an excellent curling shot. Oh, and Santos looked very sharp on his comeback and looked like he really enjoyed his hour on the pitch. He acknowledged the fans every time we sang his name as well, which was nice to see.
