No doubt that despite what statistics say, Pires and Freddie were far, far better players than Theo and PoldiJonathan Prendergast wrote:Vanig Bostanian wrote:How many of Theo's goals were in the league? How handy would his 14 goals a season be these days, not to mention his general great play.
For my own reasons, I assume that Pires's goals would be on top of Theo's, Poldi's and Cazorla's. Although realistically you are correct.

I think Theo and podolski will both kick on more next season...to be fair podolski has had a really good first season considering being subed most games...17 goals and 11 assists is a great crack....he would have felt the difference in not having the winter break....

The phrase "despite what statistics say" has no place in that phrase!
First of all, if we were really going to challenge for the league it would be important to have someone better, harder-working and more reliable than Theo in the team. People don't seem to realise that. He was AW's pet project yet he's just not going to become a great player with his limited ability to improve, incapability to play as the fulcrum of the side despite what his ego tells him.
Podolski has scored useful goals but in truth we were warned about his habit of disappearing. Journalists who had seen him for Bayern said that, he can't play as a centre-forward despite what fans on message boards say either. Yet, he is no left winger against better sides either (brilliant against Newcastle and West Ham but that doesn't count - disappears against a Chelsea or a Man Utd)
Pires and Ljungberg had something else. The intelligence and nous of that side cannot be replicated. Not everyone could be a star through outrageous talent so someone like Ljungberg had to find other ways to make himself vital to the team. Pires was silky though no doubt.
To be honest the comparison is useless. Different side, different stadium, different era.

Podoslki and Theo are top finishers, but agree they could add more to their game.

Re: Summer transfer window 2013
I've got a theory on Grenier.
We know Arsene likes to deflect attention from his actual targets, and they are generally a surprise to all of us when the transfers occur.
Remi Garde is OL manager. Wenger noted public they had been watching Grenier. Would he do this if he was actually interested? Go public about a player in Remi Garde's (his friend) team?
I suggest it was pre-arranged, and gives OL and Grenier a chance to state he is committed, or bump up his price if there is another club after him.

Interesting.
We scored 76 goals this season.
In 2003/04, we scored 73 goals, got 90 points and won the league.

Could say it's because defenses these days aren't as strong as they used to be a decade and further back. Back then the strongest defenses conceded no more than 20 goals a season, these days they're lucky if they concede less than 30. I bet if we had a 25 year old Henry now, he too would be scoring at the rate of Messi and Ronaldo. That or attacking has just become a lot better over the years?

Re: Summer transfer window 2013
That may be part of it. About 0.2 goals per game more these days. 2.8 per game rather than 2.6.

Bookmarking that site.......full of stats.....
I would say its a point of teams now have more attacking defenders who can get on the score sheet a few times a season and therefore teams are more open to counter attacking which ships goals as they cannot be here there and everywhere....long gone are the days of defence mid and forwards its now blending mid into attack and supporting backs to overwhelm the defending team.....so many goals come from counter attacking now compared to years ago....

Re: Summer transfer window 2013
Manchester City starlet Abdisalam Ibrahim hopes to work with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger one day, amid speculation the Gunners are chasing his services
The Norway Under-21 international has attracted interest from us, Sunderland, Liverpool, Tottenham, West Bromwich and Swansea in the last few months.
He is highly-rated at City, but his first-team chances will be hugely restricted due to the clubs expensively-assembled squad.
The midfielder, who has been compared to Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira, has 18 months left on his deal but the club are allowing him to move so he can play regular first-team football.
As quoted on the Sky Sports website, he said: “I’m very flattered to be linked with Arsenal, I grew up as an Arsenal fan and my hero was Patrick Vieira when he was playing there.
“I would be very honoured to play for Arsenal and it would be all my dreams come true to work with Arsene Wenger.”
Wenger is renowned for nurturing young talent and see’s the lad as an ideal talent to come in and turn into a superstar.
So Ibrahim would be best off make a move to London rather than his other prospective suitors in the summer window, if he leaves the Etihad.

Yeah, I heard David Villa showed Barcelona's board a pre-contract agreement to sign with Arsenal.

Not exactly transfer but it's good that Rosicky is staying for another year. He still is a very useful player.

Well our look for a back up keeper has taken a twist for the good.....
BREAKING: The betting has now been suspended on Julio Cesar joining @Arsenal. #AFC --> http://sky.me/12odyKk
Somebody knows something with that....

It could mean something.
I suspect these betting companies don't get that many bets placed on these sorts of things. Games are their bread and butter. But they do get lots of free publicicity by creating these odds. So closing the bets on Cesar will certainly get them in the headlines!

It will indeed......but no point in publishing a close of bets... I asked a friend who used to work in a betting office....he simply said......if they know or think they know it will happen there is no point in taking any bets on it.....

While getting a backup/first choice goal keeper isn't the top priority, it still is very very important.

Very encouraging if true. And he's our best shot, really. Rooney's too expensive, and Villa is too old. If not Higuain, then perhaps Benteke or even Michu. But I'd prefer if the world saw Arsenal buying from Real Madrid rather than Aston Villa or Swansea.

Also, has anyone heard about what Koscielny said recently? That stuff about him leaving if the club don't show any ambition?

Maybe I need to watch the interview itself. Everyone's spinning it like he's this summer's van Persie.

I wish Kos didn't say it. He was playing Ligue 2 a few seasons ago, and was plucked from relative obscurity. While he may want the club to show ambition, he should keep it to himself for at least another season.
