Re: Olivier Giroud
Similar price and reputation as Silvain Wiltord when we signed him and he worked out very well, scored some very important goals and was always willing to help the team, from the bench, from the wing, whatever he was asked.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Poor Wiltord never got the love or recognition he deserved at Arsenal because he was surrounded by such amazing players at the time.
Good man!

If Wiltord hasn't done anything at Arsenal, he has scored THAT goal.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Bollocks. Anyone who was a fan ten years ago knew that he was an important player for Arsenal.
Yes, he wasn't in the best XI but he filled in on the right after Pires' injury and Ljungberg's move to left midfield. He was a reliable player who often scored when played up front, which wasn't too often for obvious reasons.
Wiltord got recognition as a good squad player, long before the days of shoehorning Eboue in at right midfield, that oh-so-painful memory.

Re: Olivier Giroud
One of my other favourite memories of Wiltord is the goal he scored against West Ham, in the same game that Henry scored a wondergoal as well. If I remember correctly, we were 2 nil down and drew the game 2-2.
I think it's also a measure of how good Pires and Ljungberg were for us. Wiltord has been successful with every club he has played for and was also an important member of the France team.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Having said that, I do hope Giroud goes on to score more goals than Wiltord did for us (49 in all competitions?).

Re: Olivier Giroud
France behind, maybe we'll see Giroud now.
Benzema is obviously highly rated, but he doesn't offer much to aim at, he's constantly dropping off. This is not La Liga so he's having very little impact. I'd be tempted to say that he's a little over-rated generally - very skillful, creates good assists for Cronaldo, but there is no Ronaldo for France, what is Benzema going to do in his own right?
Ribery creates little but that was the case even in 2006, when he was praised pretty highly for doing the dog work.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Missed a good chance but he was unlucky in the first place not to get on sooner. France a crying out for a genuine striker (a threat up front at least), it wasn't Benzema tonight.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Didn't have much time to make an impact.
Malouda on the other hand, was just awful.

Deal obviously done if Wenger is talking about it, can't remember him ever having spoken about a deal before it was completed.

That's very unusual that he was so open and blatant about it when the deal isn't finished yet. I don't know how to feel about it.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Exactly, it's a strange one but I presume it's only the medical that needs to be passed in order to complete the deal. In which case, it's a mere formality given he's currently playing at the Euros.

Well I like him...good potential to fill a hard granite slot needed to cover defense..
Bayern have cooled their intrest in him paving a potential move to us....make you wonder why they have decided to not go after him..high wages? High fee? Something not seen as before?....who knows.
That said if we can get him for a good price...go for it and I could see that ending our transfer window for signings....
Just to ship out that dead wood.

Or Wenger might not have said those things at all and it might be totally fictional?
