I don't take Wenger seriously when he talks about "mental strength" "quality" "exceptional" "we are working hard to sign top quality" all these.

Re: January transfers
Wenger: "If you look at the African Nations, the best striker is Gervinho & after we have 1-2 good young players who will get a chance."
I'm about to lose my mind up in this bitch, surely Wenger is trolling every Arsenal fan out there. Essentially he's now telling us that our signings will be gervinho and some promoted youngsters!
I'm not holding my breath, I'm sure we won't sign anyone. This window will end the same as last year, lots of anticipation with no substance...

It's almost 99.99% certain we won't sign anybody....I enjoy watching transfer deadline evening on sky sports news not just at the chance we will sign someone but for all the enjoyment of watching big deals come in....this year however is going to be somewhat different.......
Think I might just fuck off to the pub instead.

Transfer news: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists he will delve into the transfer market only if the right player becomes available and will resist the temptation to make a signing to satisfy supporters’ demands.
Wenger admits Arsenal would benefit from a top-quality addition in the closing hours of the winter window, but refuses to be pressurised into recruiting a player who would cause the club a problem and hamper the development of young talent.
“I have to be strong enough to resist,” said Wenger, who was speaking ahead of tonight’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.
“What is important is that you bring in players who can strengthen your team, or you do nothing, you’re strong enough to do nothing.
“We could do with top quality, one more, but you have to find him.
“If I bring a normal player in, I give the club a problem.
“It is for four years and I am stopping the young players to give him a chance. The second thing is even more damaging because we have two or three young players with a good chance to play for us.”

Re: January transfers
It is looking less likely that we will sign someone but I never trust a word Wenger says during transfer windows. Numerous times he's said we have not wanted a certain player and we end up getting him. And Wenger is known for leaving his signings until the last couple days.
May not sign anyone, which is disappointing, but never say never until the end of the window.

Re: January transfers
I've pretty much given up of signing anyone since about mid-January (I thought before the window we'd get a player, at a long stretch 2 but one of those would be an Eisfeld type not for the first team) so am not frantically checking Twitter or NewsNow hoping to see anyone but let's say we were to sign someone now, why the wait?
We've already lost 2 games this month and have another tough game tonight and another in 3 days, two games that we really need 6 points in, would the wait really have been worth it? To save how much exactly?
It used to be I'd sit back and trust everyone to make the right decision when it came to transfers and the ins and outs of players but honestly I don't anymore.

Re: January transfers
i knew we would hit a little bit of form and wenger would see it as no need for backup...just watch gervinho come back to being dog shit when the AOC is done diaby and gibbs get injured rosicky too...
the whole world will cry out why nothing was done and we will get the usual..
"we have enough strength in depth and togetherness"

I assume he didn't go for Ba as he is not good at combing with the midfield?

Re: January transfers
Cover for left-back.
New leader in defense.
Proper defensive mid-fielder.
A real striker.
Not necessarily in that order.
Not just talking about this transfer window - but summer 2012, january 2013 and the upcoming transfer window.
ARGHHHH!!!!
Times like these - I want to punch Wenger. And strangle Stan Kroenke.

Everything will be alright...Santos covering at left back what could go wrong....oh....
Simply put..Wenger HAS to spend....if I can see you can see and most of if not every other person can see what we need I would hope Wenger can to....

Re: January transfers
I know its goal.com.. but have you heard of this guy?
It sounds very much like a wenger-signing! Have a feeling this is the one and only signing this january.

Re: January transfers
Spanish football expert Andy West from his Barcelona base: "A new signing from Spain in the offing for Arsenal...but it's not David Villa. Radio Marca are reporting that Malaga's Nacho Monreal has caught a flight to London to negotiate terms with the Gunners. "The 26-year-old is Malaga's first choice left back and a full Spain international. Malaga don't want to sell but it appears their financial problems have forced them to accept an offer reported to be in the region of £8m."

That's great and all, but he's cup tied for Champions League. Good thing is that this means Santos is done here.

Re: January transfers
There is a disapponting trend at the club concerning mediocre players on three-year contracts. We realise within a year that they're not good enough but we're fully aware that they'll hang around for every minute of the contract eking out every pence worth. Squillaci and Chamakh are two examples, but average young players like Denilson and Bendtner are just as big a problem.
Upon signing him, the Arsenal website informed us that "Arsenal Football Club can confirm the signing of Brazilian defender Andre Santos on a long-term contract."
Doesn't sound good. Minimum three years, hopefully not more. We'll do well to get rid of him on loan. Clubs will laugh at wage demands. About time we stopped signing such shit.

Re: January transfers
Just a left-back (and a cup-tied one at that) is a farce though.
For me the most striking need is in the middle of midfield where we simply don't have enough of a certain type of player. Cazorla is way too deep there to be fully effective and is defensively not right for the position. Ramsey is doing OK, Coquelin has been quite effective but Diaby can't be relied upon. Overall we're only just struggling through, but given that Wenger hasn't taken an interest in a genuine muscular midfielder since 2008, that isn't a surprise.
