Wesley Wang wrote:Arteta. He's a model of consistency and you get the impression that he's in it for the long haul i.e. not going to move to some other European club as soon as he has a good season. My only concern is that he's not a dominant or vocal figure on the pitch; he just does his job and does it well.
Vermaelen would be an excellent choice but for the points Jonathan made.
Whilst Arteta may not be vocal on the pitch, I get the impression he does lead and he does mentor players.

Vermaelen... He's just signed a long-term deal with us. He's always been in it for the long run, at least he gives off that vibe. Plus, imagine how pissed off you would be if you were vice captain and the captaincy then got passed on to someone else? Plus, I don't buy this he isn't a guaranteed starter. of course he will be. He's had to career threatening injuries, give him a bit. He'll have a full pre season under his belt. Don't underestimate him, he is one heck of a defender.

I know for the Norwich game when was injured he spent before the game in the dressing room, went to his box for the game and then came back down at half time. Mertesacker as well I think came back down at half time.

I think Vermaelen is likely to get it.
Arteta would be a good choice as well.
Beyond that, Sagna maybe, obviously one day Wilshire will be captain for me but its way way too soon.

I personally think it would be better just to let him concentrate on playing. I agree, this season, he can take his play to another level. But that is better done without the burden or distraction of captaincy.
But who knows. Sometimes becoming captain can help a player improve. It could make him a more thoughtful team player, rather than the testosterone charged crasher and basher that he currently is.

Re: Captain 2012/13
What on Earth does take his play to another level mean?
He's the one centre-back we have whose weaknesses are regularly exploited by the opposition. I like his commitment and ill-advised runs upfield when they work but he shouldn't even be an unquestionable starter based on his time at the club so far.

I think he means that tv will up his game even more...
That said I think the ol verminator could do well as captain...very vocal, fairly organized, strong presence....and like said the vice captain being overlooked would surly put a dent in his game season coming....
He gets my vote....

Re: Captain 2012/13
Arteta would be a good choice but I think Vermaelen will take the armband and rightly so. It'd be a bit insulting to have him as VC then not have him as captain.
I am not a fan of the captains who lead not vocally but through how they play (Henry, Cesc etc arguably Van Persie too), I want a captain like Tony Adams again. One who will give joggers a bollocking, and go crazy if someone makes an obvious mistake, and Vermaelen is more likely to do that than Arteta. He was captain of Ajax and Belgium both from a young age too so he knows what the job is about.

Surely he needs to work on organisation and understanding with the other defenders, not other adrenaline-associated adjectives.

True. Doesn't mean people cannot be influenced by him though.

If he is thinking the same as I was...it's probably 99% sure it's what he ment...work as a unit...gain more experience and develope with the back line we have....

I'd give it to Arteta, but I'm sure it will be the Verminator.

Vermaelen to be captain.
In the end, whilst I thought against it, I am happy with that.

Re: Captain 2012/13
I'm happy with that too. Just hope he doesn't jump ship after a season or two.
Tbh I've always preferred captains being in more defensive positions ie defence or midfield. It gives me the impression that they're more involved or should I say at the "heart" of the team. Strikers and more offensive players can seem detached from the rest of the side, especially on an off day or when they don't get the service they need.

Re: Captain 2012/13
I'm happy with vermaelen as captain, I thinl it will really focus hom more on his defensive duties, and we all know how good he can be when he commits to defending. Last season we didnt have that cazorla type creativity on the team, which resulted in the likes of song and verms pushing forward to the detriment of our defence. Thats not even mentioning the discontinuity on our defence last year, read sonewhere thay the dirst time our team played the same defence in back to back games last season was in the 17th game! Think we'll be much stronger defensively this year.

I'm happy with TV as captain. Has done the job for other teams and is not afraid to give someone a bollocking if needs be. I guess this means the two starting CB's in Wenger's mind is Kos/TV, with Per on the bench.

Arsenal move on. Vermaelen first captain in ages chosen for leadership rather than to make him stay.
