Re: Jan Vertonghen
We need another striker as well, because for me Podolski will step straight into the starting XI on the left of the front 3, which still leaves us short if RVP gets injured. Out of all of our attacking options (Theo, Gerv, Ox, Podolski, RVP, Benayoun) only van Persie is a real center forward now.
Podolski IS that back up striker for me. It's probably his best position. The fact that he can play both on the wing and as a central striker is most likely the reason we're signing him. What's the point in bringing in another central striker like Chamakh or Park (albeit better) who can only play in one position and won't get any games there except for when RVP gets rotated?
Podolski will get games on the wing when RVP is fit and rested, and games up front when RVP is injured or needs rotation, and one of Gervinho, Walcott and Chamberlain can play when Podolski needs a rest. Makes more sense to me.

If we get a work permit for Joel Campbell we'll be set up front as far as I'm concerned.

We won't get work permit for Joel that fast. At least another season or two loan in France, then he'll get it.

I don't see why not. He's an established international as well isn't he, which is rather helpful.

Yeah but that too depends on the ranking of the nation in FIFA's list. Vela and Denilson were easy to get "Special Work Permit" because of this. The rest like Samuel Galindo and all, never got it.

You can never have too much quality. If we get the opportunity to sign players like Vertonghen or M'Vila or someone else, we should and then worry about where we will play them later

He isn't very good as of yet.

His talent is obvious, but I agree. Not quite there yet.

Looks like all those Vertonghen deal being done rumors were bollocks. Dutch media claiming only Spurs have made contact so far.

Re: Jan Vertonghen
players rumoured to join big clubs = inflation of transfer price = big spenders get into the scene = more inflation = wenger backs out(even if interested) = wenger uses his scouting setup to find better and cheap alternatives that complement the team

Although I did want him, we have Coquelin who can play almost everywhere on the pitch. :S (trying to feel OK with him not joining, which should'nt be difficult I guess).

Dutch media report that but Vertonghen himself has already said that he only wants to join Arsenal.
Also Belgium media reports that he's close to signing for us.

Re: Jan Vertonghen
Arsenal target Jan Vertonghen has been told to snub the Premier League and join Barcelona instead.
Arsene Wenger is thought to be confident of signing the Ajax defender, who is also wanted by Spurs and Newcastle.
But Ajax manager Frank de Boer, who saw his side clinch the Eredevisie title last night, has advised his star man to move to Spain instead.
"I hope he will leave for Barcelona. Of course, Tottenham is a great club for Jan, but I think he will fit perfect at Barca."
De Boer is in no doubt that Vertonghen will leave Ajax in the summer, telling reporters he was "almost sure" the Belgian had played his last game at the Amsterdam ArenA.
"If Van der Wiel and Vertonghen leave then that will be a big chunk taken out of the squad," he added.

I know we don't necessarily need him, but if he doesn't come to us, I don't want to see him (and do well) in another PL club.vyom.chaudhary wrote:http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11675/7734778/VDV-Vertonghen-deal-close

Tottenham and Arsenal are identical at this point - both bottlers, both maybe in the CL. If I were Vertonghen I would make my demands, and if they both match them, wait a week and see who goes through.

Re: Jan Vertonghen
Can't see Vertonghen happening unless we decide to move Vermaelen to LB. If M'Vila rumours are true then Wenger will be on the look out for a new central attacking midfielder. Our team is crying out for one.
We have 3 good CBs in Per,Kos and Verms apart from Djourou. Also Kyle Bartley will be back alongside Miquel as reserve CBs.

We have only Rosicky as a recognized attacking midifielder.. BUT we have Ramsey, Chamberlain and Podolski who can play there.. maybe even Arteta or Diaby so it's not that bad.
