The Rest of the Season! Quite Sure We Will Make it to Top 4 Empty The Rest of the Season! Quite Sure We Will Make it to Top 4

Post by Vanig Bostanian Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:25 pm

Earlier this season when we went on a ridiculous run of games not having a single shot on target, I was not sure we could make it to top 4, but things have changed since then:
1 Our new players have settled. Poldi is assisting for fun and scoring quite a few. Santi, after his dip in from for a while seems to have gotten back to not his best, but some good form, and Giroud is scoring, assisting, and defending.
2 Jack is back. Probably more important than the "Rosicky is back" of last season
3 Our players are at the "right age" and now that they are settled somehow, we can expect consistency from them
4 This one is a surprise, but Theo Walcott. Yes, he still looks quite clumsy, perhaps at Arsenal we've been spoiled by the excellent technique of Thierry and Dennis, but Theo is effective. His assists and goals prove that, and he is one of our most important players.
Things we should work on to have an even bigger chance:
1 Defense obviously. We saw what Szczesny is capable of last weekend and we saw that we can defend when we want to, and against teams we've struggled in recent seasons so we should do more of that. We didn't concede against Stoke all season, so that's a plus.
2 Be more clinical in front of goal. Even after the red card, we still could have scored at least another against Sunderland and sealed the victory.

Good post. I still believe we'll get 4th spot just like I have believed it every season. Liverpool are not a threat I believe, Everton are good but will drop more points than us. For me it'll be Chelsea/Spurs and us fighting it out for 3rd and 4th spot, and Spurs have the weaker squad. The match against Spurs soon though will be huge. Luckily we've whooped them 5-2 the past copuple games so the confidence should be with us.

Agree with all three posts on the thread so far.

The game against Sp*rs could decide which one of us finishes in the top 4.

Just had a look at the PL fixtures and if results go our way, we can finish 3rd.

Chelsea - 3rd with 49 points

Fixtures : Man City (away), West Brom, Fulham (away), West Ham, Southampton (away), Sunderland, Tottenham, Liverpool (away), Swansea,
Man United (away), Aston Villa (away) & Everton.

With Benitez incharge, things don't look great for Chelsea and if they sack him at any point now, it will cause even more instability.

Ideally would want them to lose to Manchester City, Liverpool & Manchester United - all away.

Additionally also want them to draw at Fulham, a resurgent Southampton, relegation-battling Aston Villa - all away - and against Everton (chasing the Europa League spot) at home on the last day of the season.

End of season position / points : 4th / 68 points.

Tottenham - 4th with 48 points

Fixtures : West Ham (away), Arsenal, Liverpool (away), Fulham, Swansea (away), Everton, Chelsea (away), Man City, Wigan (away), Southampton, Stoke (away) & Sunderland.

Hate them and hope they lose all their games but thats not likely to happen. Gareth Bale is on a great run of form and they are getting in the habit of picking up the 3 points again. AVB well settled but might crumble when the pressure is on.

We need them to lose to Chelsea and Liverpool away and at home to us and Manchester City.

Draws against West Ham, Swansea and Stoke away as well as at home to Everton and Southampton (really pushing it there).

End of season position / points : 6th / 62 points.

Everton - 6th with 42 points.

Fixtures : Norwich (away), Reading, Arsenal (away), Man City, Stoke, Tottenham (away), QPR, Sunderland (away), Fulham, Liverpool (away), West Ham & Chelsea (away).

Losses away to us and to Manchester City at home.

Draws Tottenham, Sunderland, Liverpool & Chelsea - all away.

End of season position / points : 5th / 64 points.

Arsenal - 5th with 44 points.

Fixtures : Aston Villa, Tottenham (away), Everton, Swansea (away), Reading, West Brom (away), Norwich, Fulham (away), Man United, QPR (away), Wigan & Newcastle (away).

With the quality and experience in our squad now and all our players coming in form at the right time, we really can go on a run and pick up 8-9 wins from our last 12 games.

According to my "calculations" we can only really afford to lose to Manchester United at home and draw Swansea, Fulham and Newcastle away.

End of season position / points : 3rd / 71 points.

Obviously can't expect all the results to our way but what this does show is if we can win 8 of our remaining games (9 would be a bonus) we really are in a position to finish in the top 4.

Sp*rs have two "sets" of difficult games. Firstly, West Ham (away), Arsenal and Liverpool (away) and secondly, Everton, Chelsea (away) and Manchester City. This is where their season can fall apart.

*wishful thinking*

Right, playing around with Excel a little more - this really isn't healthy.

Assuming both Arsenal and Spurs lose 2 of their last 12 games, we have to win atleast 2 more games than them - and it will still be decided on goal difference.

Another (last one I promise) way of looking at it - we must win 8 and Sp*rs must not win more than 5 and lose atleast 2.

I am still not as sure as I would like to be on us in the top 4 mix.....we are playing well at the moment as well as to puting away the 'park a bus' teams...just don't see how it could be so seen until another good 5 games have gone..we have spurs coming up winning it I belive to be the difference for either team finishing 4th the three above will stay the same as it is now...Everton will struggle...the do well but the fight just alludes them right at the death...even our goal difference is getting a little chipped unto now....

The next seven games alone will decide our fate....cup against Blackburn to see if we can end this trophyless run and progress...hammer tie against bayern then villa and spurs Everton in the league..the return game with bayern then the game against our favourites Swansea.....I will only really pitch in with 'will we won't we' after the Swansea game..we could be by then in both cups a win over spurs with them dropping points best possible situation us collecting against Everton in forth 2 points to the good...but still only two....its close...very close....

I feel we will be judged solely on our league position this year. How far we get in the FA Cup is a bit irrelevant, if you know what I mean?

It makes me nervous just reading this, this will be so fucking tight but I think we'll nick it.

The biggest concern for me is, whichever way you look at it, you can't help but feel if we don't put it together at WHL we won't finish top 4. Hell even if we are desperately unlucky on the day, or the ref has a horror, that could be it for us. There is virtually zero room for error, that's the biggest issue.

Our recent record at White Hart Lane -

2011-12: Lost 2-1
2010-11: Draw 3-3
2009-10: Lost 2-1
2008-09: Draw 0-0
2007-08: Won 3-1

So it's been a while since we won there. We need to avoid defeat this time around. Lose to Tottenham and we are not catching them. A draw isn't the worst result but obviously we'd love a win, it could prove to be decisive. But I can't see it.

But I'm not looking that far ahead. It really is a game at a time with us. Lose Wilshere for a month and we are fucked. Same as losing Cazorla or even Giroud. Tottenham and Chelsea are still favourites for the top 4 places but we are just behind them. I'd love to feel more confident but I can't. Maybe in a month or if Bale were to get a bad injury sometime soon...

we do seem to be on a good run and our players especially the new signings are finally looking like finding their feet, but we've been way too inconsistent to be able to predict anything right now, the match with spuds would be key I think..

Since the first day of the season I said we'll get top 4. Spurs are really just a one man team, and that one man is Bale not RVPrick, everton have a very small squad and never realyl worried me. If anything, we can get 3rd place as Benitez isn't doing great and they have some tough games coming up. A draw at shite hart lane would be enough I think, but of course we'll go to win.

In contrast since the beginning of the season i have been feeling that we will miss out on the top four and I still think we will, Spurs look stronger than us to me, as much as it pains me to say it.

2 points behind Chelsea, and 4 behind Spurs with a game in hand.

And now Chelsea have to play United in the FA Cup tomorrow, Europa on Thursday, and Sunderland on Sunday!
