Guard of Honour for United Empty Guard of Honour for United

I am unsure it is warranted.

If United had won away from home, and it was at Old Trafford, then fair enough.

Or like 1991, if other results meant that they now won the league, and it was at home, then a guard of honour is appropriate.

But they have already won it, at their home, is it really warranted? Will every team give them a guard of honour for the rest of the season?

Think it's just a sportsmanship thing and everyone playing them for the rest of the season has to (or rather chooses to) do it out if respect for the new champions . Can't be sure though, that's just what I think, however I do believe we will do it if it's true that everyone does it.

Guard of honour baffles United's unknown soldiers
By Jim White12:01AM BST 10 May 2007

The look on John Terry's face was a picture. There he was, straight-backed and dignified, corralling his players into line, ensuring they all knew their place in the guard of honour and then out of the Stamford Bridge tunnel, instead of the champions he was expecting, came a bunch of pimply youths barely recognisable in their own homes.

Fangzhou Dong, Chris Eagles and Kieran Lee could barely believe what was going on. With one previous Premiership appearance for Manchester United between them, suddenly they were being applauded on to the pitch by the captain of England. What on earth, they must have thought, happens when you turn out a second time?

Not that everyone was happy with Chelsea's sportsmanlike acknowledgement of their rivals' title-winning achievement. A terrace pundit near the press box was apoplectic. Sir Alex Ferguson was making a mockery of the Blues' guard of honour, he reckoned.

By sending out a side stuffed with the untested and the unschooled, with a right flank featuring such high shirt numbers they resembled nothing more than the menu for a Chinese takeaway, the Manchester United manager was insulting Chelsea's gesture. "John Terry's been made to look an idiot," the pundit fulminated.

It is almost as if the guard of honour business for the champions were a noble custom to be venerated and that to bespoil it by sending out the reserves was the equivalent of belching during Abide With Me on Cup Final day.

In fact there has been never been anything consistent in its application. Newcastle players applauded the Arsenal team on to St James' Park as long ago as May 1994, to mark the fact that they had just won the European Cup-Winners' Cup. Everton also gave United the full works at Goodison Park on the last day of the 2003 season, much to the chagrin of the gloomier sections of their support.

But it was the sight of the United players themselves in May 2005, of Roy Keane and Gary Neville standing opposite each other as they clapped Chelsea on to the pitch at Old Trafford to mark Jose Mourinho's first Premiership title, that seems to have remained in everyone's mind, assuming almost mythic proportions. Mind you, it was some sight.

How odd to see the ultimate competitors instructed by their ultimately competitive manager to celebrate the arrival of the new boys at the top table, not with a private handshake and a swapped shirt in the players' lounge but publicly, in full view of their sniggering detractors. Neville said afterwards that no single action in his professional career had stuck in his craw as much as standing there, refusing to make eye contact as he was obliged to acknowledge his rivals' success. He looked, in fact, much like Terry two years later.

That might well have been in Ferguson's mind when he instructed his boys to line up that night: nothing would more pointedly bring home their own failure to land the title. Certainly that it is how Chelsea's reciprocation of the honour two years later was being rationalised around Stamford Bridge before the game. This was the manager's latest motivational tool: make sure that next time you are the ones receiving the respect, not handing it out.

The love-in, however, only lasted as long as it took to dismantle the honour guard. Belying the suggestion from the team sheets that this was to be some sort of testimonial kickaround, John Mikel Obi and Alan Smith were soon snapping into one another, with Chris Eagles attempting onfield surgery on Claude Makelele's shins. Despite there being little at stake beyond the chance to get fitted out in an FA Cup Final suit, so aggressive did it all get at times Ferguson had to replace his captain Gabriel Heinze before the Argentinian spontaneously combusted. That is presumably what they really mean by mutual respect.

Maybe it would motivate our players?

But yes, the guard of honour is inconsistently applied. If this game was at Old Trafford, and they had won the league away from home, fair enough. But we are not compelled to do it in this case.

I'm going to the game on Sunday and I'll have to look away if it happens. I really don't want to see a smug RvP, Evra and Rio get honoured like that at the Emirates.

I'll be there but I won't be watching it either. Call me bitter, childish whatever but I'd rather fall down the stairs than acknowledge that grey haired goat winning the title.

This Sunday will also be the first United league game I will have seen since January, including highlights. Once it looked like the league was over I'd had enough of watching them. I made an exception to see them lose to Chelsea and Real Madrid though. Which was nice.

They deserve one, we should do it out of respect for the achievement. It would be nice seeing as they have nothing to play for to see Robin given a rest though, no need for anymore drama there in my opinion.

As much as I hate to say it, I think we should do it as well. I really think we have something with the current crop of players we have. Guys like Arteta, Cazorla, Podolski, Sagna, Wilshere, Ramsey, Chambo, Gibbs, Koscielny, Mertesacker, hell even Szczesny...these are all extremely competitive players. We finally have a team of MEN - for the first time in years, a team of tough lads who fight until the very end, not little boys who put their head down the moment they concede a goal - and they will HATE having to stand there and applaud United as they walk onto OUR HOME PITCH to claim yet another league title. They won't just shrug this off as "whatever, I'm still a rich athlete, I'm okay with being second-best." They'll remember that moment, and it'll eat at them, until they're absolutely starving to win and be champions themselves. We finally have the kind of players who will work all summer long and await next season's opening day so that they can show the world that they too are winners. So I say that we should follow the tradition, for it could very well be that last bit of motivation the team needs.

Who gives a shit. Is giving them a guard of honour any worse than scrapping for fourth every year, being fairly mediocre and treating the FA cup like shit as well as falling to the first decent side we play in the Champions League?

Until we play to our potential and sort ourselves out we can't say we don't deserve these slaps in the face. At least we can say that RvP was a top player, we also got a slap in the face from an illiterate idiot like Nasri who thought he was too good for us, despite being fairly average for the best part of three years, not to mention most of the time he's been at Man City.

as a fan of a once praised and loved player who the fans and club stood by through all the injuries and his bad times i give a shit for one....if they want a guard of honor go get one off man city the team they took the title from...

why should we have to subject our fans, image and players to negitives right before a big game they have it wrapped up we are fighting for a champions league position....its bollocks the only team that should give a guard of honor to the new title winners is the ones who just lost it....no other team will do it for them for the rest of the season so why the fuck should we...

and all the worse that a judas cunt is going to lap it up like the big headed wanker he has become....if i could turn back time and see him in the shit he had being locked up and to how he is now i would fucking leave him there fuck all the wonder goals and last seasons tally...leave him to rot for slagging of the club doing the dirty to the fans and dragging the club through it....

fuck him and fuck united.....
