Jonathan Prendergast wrote:It was amazing when we had Gilberto, Flamini and Diarra. A year later we had none of them! It really was a trouble spot for the team and Wenger. As was that 3rd centre back position over many years with Senderos and Cygan under performing.

We are blessed with depth in defence compared to those years now.

RB: Sagna, with Jenkinson improving immensely over the last season
CB: Mertesacker and Koscielny, with Vermaelen as backup and Miquel coming through the ranks
LB: Gibbs and Nacho competing for the starting spot

Not a bad look of things, not bad at all.

I'd almost say: Jenkinson, with Sagna as back up!

Our defenders as individuals are very good, and with some discipline and hard work from the midfield, we're as good as any team, but our shortcomings this season was from the attack. We don't have a game changer in the team. We might be the second scoring team in the league but most of those goals have come in high scoring games. We went 3 games or so without recording a single shot on target ffs. We need a new van Persie.

"The ex-Arsenal midfielder is one of a number of players deemed surplus to requirements as Barca look to rebuild their squad."
We knew he would be surplus to the Barca midfield before he left us, didn't he know about it?

And I'd take Cesc in a heartbeat. I might still question his mental strength. Our bottling tendencies were highlighted in him, but he is 25 now and should come back stronger than when he left. Though one thing puzzles me, even with life after Fabregas we still play the same game which was designed to suit Fabregas, the 16 year old teenager. Shows you how much faith Wenger put on Cesc.

Always wondered why we stuck with the 4-3-3 after Cesc left. I guess Wenger didn't want to look like he had been wrong, or maybe he thought he could make do without Fabregas. Either way, that system was never the same after we lost our playmaker.

The 4-3-3 also worked well because we had Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri in the team - Fabregas was one part of it, a very big part I agree but I feel van Persie was always a more important component of the system (pity we didn't get to watch them play much together).

Before the 4-3-3, we played more of a 4-5-1 of which Fabregas was a bigger part. Just my opinion.

Anyone for Rooney? It's not going to happen, but I'd take him.

Two points of view going around (among many I'm sure):

1- He's 27 , in his prime and longs to be the feature player again.

2- He's played top flight football for 10 + years and is losing his pace, has little left, looking at a Fernando Torres-esque decline.

I would take him. I doubt he has lost his pace and effectiveness a la Torres. Even if he has, he'd be decent in midfield.

No way, he'd demand a big transfer fee and huge wages, he's on 250k or similar at united now so he'd want parity with that atleast. For that money we could do much better. Also I think Rooney has peaked already, playing top flight football since 16, injuries are bound to creep up on him sooner rather than later, ala Owen.

If it wasn't for his crazy wages I'd definately take him. I don't think he is on the decline so much, just this season he has been played out of position a lot as Van Persie has come in. The season before he was an animal and there were moments this season where he has shown those glimpses. Put Rooney in his favourite role and play him regulary and he's a quality player.

Higauin, Wonderful finisher and can make things out of nothing, lacks a bit of pace and probably isn't very strong though. Still, I'm a big fan of his though and I hope it is true!

Really interested to see if this Higuain thing turns out to be true. As for Fabregas, we have first dibs should he leave Barcelona, and he's not gonna go play for United now that Ferguson is gone. Yes, he'd probably do very well with van Persie, Nani, Kagawa, etc in front of him, but I think he'd rather come back to a club that actually gave a damn about him.

think it goes without saying he would be welcomed back no issues.......

not sure what to think about this rooney so called bid lol

we could afford him..the wages wont be much of a problem with the imminent departures/slack....

Yeah, I think it's been clear for a while that Squillaci, Park, Bendtner, Chamakh, and Arshavin are all gone this summer (if we can find buyers). Frees up a good bit of money. I personally would take Rooney, although there's a few strikers I like better. But I don't think he's the kind of player Wenger would go after.

But yeah, a front three of Podolski, Rooney, and Walcott would be pretty badass. Especially with Fabregas behind them.

Hell, swap out Rooney with any of the other strikers we're reportedly after. It still looks like a team that will win some silverware.
