What is the NextGen Series?
Essentially the NextGen Series is an Under-19 version of the Champions League. It is a European cup competition, played over the course of six months, for youth-team players from some of the biggest clubs in the continent. It is based on a similar format to the Champions League and is designed to help the stars of the future prepare to play in that competition.

How is it organised?
The 2011/12 season was the first year that the competition was held, and the 16 teams involved were split into four groups of four. Each club played each other home and away, with the top two in each group progressing to the knockout stages.

So far, so Champions League. But with fewer teams than its senior counterpart, the Series went straight into the quarter-final stage, with each tie a one-legged affair played at the home of each group winner. The semi-finals were also one-off matches, while the final was played at a neutral venue.

With more teams expected for the 2012/13 version of the Series, the format is likely to be tweaked to accommodate six groups of four teams. The group stages will take place between August and December, with the knockout matches played in the first quarter of 2013.

What are the rules?
There is an age limit of 19 for players participating in the tournament, although teams are allowed to select up to three Under-20 players in their squad.

Which teams are involved?
During the inaugural season of the NextGen Series, 16 clubs from around Europe were involved: Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham (England), Ajax, PSV Eindhoven (Holland), Molde, Rosenborg (Norway), Barcelona (Spain), Inter Milan (Italy), Celtic (Scotland), Wolfsburg (Germany), Marseille (France), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), Basel (Switzerland) and Fenerbahce (Turkey).

However, Chelsea (England), Paris St Germain (France) and Olympiacos (Greece) have since signed up, along with Arsenal. The organisers are aiming to have 24 teams for the 2012/13 competition.

What happened this season?
The Series kicked off in August 2011 and proved to be a big success. Following the group stages, Inter Milan edged past Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in the first quarter-final, with Marseille getting the better of Aston Villa in the second match.

However, there was controversy following the all-English clash between Tottenham and Liverpool, which Spurs won 1-0. The north London club voluntarily withdrew after an “inadvertent breach of a competition regulation” and Liverpool progressed to the semi-finals, where they were drawn against Ajax, who beat Barcelona 3-0.

In the first semi-final, Ajax thrashed Liverpool 6-0 in front of 6,000 fans at Langtree Park in St Helens, before Inter Milan beat Marseille 2-0 at Griffin Park a week later.

In a closely-contested final, Inter Milan were crowned the first winners of the NextGen Series after a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Ajax at Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium. Liverpool, meanwhile, beat Marseille 2-0 in the third-placed play-off.

I like the Loan Watch but really wish they did a bit more research and included more details. Example, can't be hard to find out how many minutes Arshavin played, could it? It was 2 days ago and you could probably find something like that on Goal.com or something, surely. Or maybe drop Andrei a text. And I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Yennaris' season was over. Yep, just went on his Twitter, from 14th April -

Nico Yennaris ‏ @Nico_Yennaris
Decent result for boys at notts today. Keep pushing for that play off place lads. sad my season had to finish so early with illness.

Friendly: Arsenal XI 1 Oman 0 - Match report
By Rob Kelly at London Colney

A goalkeeping error gifted an Arsenal XI a narrow 1-0 victory over Oman’s Olympic hopefuls at London Colney on Wednesday afternoon.

In driving wind and rain, Gavin Hoyte scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute. But it owed more to the poor handling of the Oman goalkeeper, who dived on the ball but allowed it to slip under his body and trickle over the line.

The score was a fair reflection of the game though after the hosts dominated against Paul Le Guen’s side and even missed a first-half penalty from Conor Henderson.

It was a useful run-out for the hosts against an Oman side gearing up for their Olympic qualification play-off match against Senegal at the Ricoh Arena on Monday.

Neil Banfield named a strong Arsenal XI line-up with the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Sebastien Squillaci, Abou Diaby, Ju Young Park and Marouane Chamakh all included.

Within five minutes of kick off, the conditions turned nasty as a biting wind was soon accompanied by near torrential rain which lasted for the entire first half.

It made life difficult for the players, but the Gunners did not let it affect them as they made the early running, Oguzhan Ozyakup firing over from the edge of the box in the fifth minute.

Squillaci came close moments later when he met Ozyakup’s corner with a powerful header, but the ball flew inches over the Oman bar.

Banfield’s side were the dominant force and again nearly grabbed the lead in the 18th minute when Henderson latched on to a Thomas Eisfield cross. The cultured midfielder - back after eight months out with a knee injury - cut back inside his marker and curled a shot towards the top corner, but his goalbound effort was well saved.

Eisfield went close just before the half-hour mark with a close-range effort, before the Gunners were handed a golden opportunity to extend their lead from the penalty spot right on half-time.

The spot kick was awarded after Ozyakup was felled in the area following a lightning-fast counter-attack, but Henderson saw his penalty brilliantly palmed away by the jubilant visiting keeper.

The game lost some of its urgency in the second half, but substitute goalkeeper James Shea had to be alert in the 50th minute to beat away a vicious long-range strike.

Finally the deadlock was broken when, in the 73rd minute, Hoyte broke forward from the back and struck a powerful shot at goal. The Oman substitute goalkeeper seemed to have it covered, but the ball squirmed out of his grasp and dropped over the line.

Eisfield had half a chance to extend the Gunners’ advantage soon afterwards when he worked his way into the box, but the Oman keeper partially redeemed himself by snatching the ball off the teenager’s feet.

That was the final chance of a low-key affair as the Arsenal XI comfortably saw out their victory.

Arsenal XI: Martinez (Shea 45), Jenkinson (Neita 60), Squillaci (Hoyte 45), Miquel (Boateng 45), Eisfeld, Ozyakup, Henderson, Diaby (Rees 45), Chamakh (Roberts 45), Park (Ebecilio 45).

Cheers Mario, I was actually in Oman last week and heard about it, wish I could've seen it! Bit sad Oman didn't win tbh, haha.

Henderson - I felt no fear on comeback

Conor Henderson says he felt no apprehension at all about making his return from injury in the Reserves' 1-0 win at Newcastle this month.

The 20-year-old had been sidelined for more than eight months after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in a friendly against Cologne in July.

But a 66-minute run-out for Neil Banfield's side in the North East was a crucial step on the road to recovery for Henderson.

“It was very good at Newcastle but it's been a frustrating time," he told the Official Arsenal Magazine. "I have just had to stay positive and patient. I knew I would get back eventually.

"I felt relief, happiness, everything you could imagine to be playing again. The frustration was gone, and it was a very good feeling.

“I thought there would be some apprehension about playing again - there was with the last injury [also a cruciate knee ligament injury, when he was 17] - but I felt fearless.

“There were no worries, I just concentrated on playing. I felt comfortable in the game and on the ball, so I was really happy with how it went. There was no reaction in the knee, no pain at all.”

He must be doing ok as he's playing a bit for a good team. But I really don't see the point of him. Has spent years on loan and don't expect to see him return.

Ryo played the first 45 minutes for Bolton last night but was subbed off for Kevin Davies. He looks to have found it harder in the last few weeks than he did at the start of his loan. But it was a good win for them, hopefully gives them the boost they need to get a result against Tottenham in a few weeks.

Lansbury has started to play regularly again in the last few weeks. Hopefully he starts in the Play-off matches.

Ryo is playing less now than he was a month-6 weeks ago. Bolton need older heads for the relegation battle and he may also be tiring, Coyle did mention it a few weeks ago.

Disappointing that Afobe and Aneke are not getting as many minutes as we would have liked. Afobe is now back at the club and I would put him on the bench ahead of Chamakh.

Bendtner, Vela, Campbell, Botelho... all doing well.

Eatmond, Watt, Murphy... see ya.

Everton defended very well and limited Arsenal to mostly long shots, a couple of which were very well saved. Not a very good game tbh. Everton have a few very good players, Barkley and Baxter looked good. Arsenal's best player was probably Ozyakup. Also Jernade Meade is the smallest footballer I have ever seen! He can't be more than 5'3!

Reserves / Youth Thread - Page 14 Empty Re: Reserves / Youth Thread

Post by Mike York on Fri May 04, 2012 9:23 pm

The first of two important weekends is upon us, significant not for Arsenal’s footballing ambitions in the current season but the next. Three points from Norwich’s visit at lunch time tomorrow are absolutely fundamental to taking a firm step towards securing third.

Before I get into the dissection of another Arsenal loanee, I just want to mention an entertaining post yesterday by Daniel Cowan at North London Is Red. Do have a read and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Right, back to today’s business where we look at a midfielder currently on loan at Championship side West Ham and examine his chances to feature for the Gunners next season.

The player of course is the tenacious Henri Lansbury. Since joining the Gunners as a 9-year old back in 1999, the 21-year old has moved up the ranks of the youth and reserves teams. He’s featured a few times for the first team as well, scoring his debut goal and Arsenal’s opener in a memorable 4-1 beating of the spuds in the League cup in September 2010.

Over the past four seasons, Lansbury has served loan stints at League One outfit Scunthorpe United and Championship sides Watford, Norwich and West Ham. His efforts helped the Canaries gain promotion last year and he is again involved in aiding the Hammers’ Premier League entry bid this time around.

Due to his excellent performances with Norwich at the end of last season, there was expectation that Henri would be part of the Gunners first team this season. He did make a couple of substitute appearances in August, but both these were demoralising defeats to Liverpool and Manchester United. On deadline day, Lansbury was sent on loan to West Ham for the rest of the season. Shortly afterwards he signed a contract extension.

The Englishman started his Irons’ loan spell in style by scoring on debut in September. But a six-week spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury affected his form, although recent showings suggest he’s coming back to his best. In all, he’s played 22 times for the Hammers this season. While he’s not added to his goal tally, he’s provided 4 assists, his latest being a delightful inch-perfect cross for Cole’s second goal at the weekend against Hull.

Lansbury has even played in goal once this season, donning the gloves AND keeping a clean sheet after Rob Green’s sending off at Blackpool in February. Performances like these have endeared him to Hammers fans and many believe he’s been underplayed by Big Sam. This is his least productive loan spell however, contributing to only 5 goals at West Ham as compared to 9 in each of his previous loan spells.

So is Henri Lansbury good enough and consistent enough to play for Arsenal?

That is a debatable question. He certainly does not possess the technical qualities of a Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey or Abou Diaby. Lansbury seems to be more of a pass and rush midfielder. In a Gunners midfield built on good possession and patient build-up, he is certainly not suited to play in the deep-lying midfield role.

Maybe his most effective position would be left of midfield, where both Ramsey and Benayoun have played recently. It would allow him to play near the edge of the box, feed the full-backs and make inside runs to meet crosses. Ramsey is going nowhere anytime soon, no matter what some fans think. In which case, should we sacrifice the experience and control that Benayoun brings to the game in order to introduce the directness of Lansbury?

Unfortunately, I do not believe Henri possesses the level required to succeed at Arsenal. He reminds me of Mark Randall, remember him? Randall was very impressive for the Reserves and captained the side, but lacked the extra quality to make it in the first team. While I believe Lansbury is more talented than Randall and will have a better footballing career, I just don’t see it with Arsenal.

Lansbury has spoken about uncertainty regarding his Gunners future, while describing Sam Allardyce as a ‘great manager’. If the Hammers gain promotion, there is a strong possibility they may bid for him. If an offer were made, I suspect it will be one Arsenal will not refuse.

I know many fans think highly of Lansbury, so do feel free to air your views. I also want to thank regular readers of the blog and especially the people who take time to comment and discuss. Writing without being read is like making a 40-feet paper toss bang in the middle of the waste-basket without anyone seeing it.

Back with the Norwich game preview tomorrow. Due to the lunchtime kick-off, I’ll try to post the preview sooner than normal, so do check back early in the day for that.

I personally would like to see him on loan at a Premiership club before selling but that seems unlikely now.

I like the kid Lansbury a lot, but I really can't see him breaking through. Our midfield is a very hard area to break into, and will be even more so next season with Wilshere back. He has talent but I see his future away from Arsenal and wouldn't be surprised if he was sold in the summer.

Agree with what most have said above. Very hard working lad, but he'll find it hard to break into the first team. It could do his career good if he moved to another club in the summer, because he'd be a regular first team in a club like west brom/norwich.

I'd still rather see Lansbury in team than Ramsey. He could be solid bench player for Arsenal.

How? Lansbury is an untalented Ramsey who works hard for the team (just like Ramsey)
