Montpellier vs Arsenal Empty Montpellier vs Arsenal

Post by Mario on Tue Sep 18, 2012 1:34 am

The French champions haven't started the season off too well. After 5 games they lie in 16th position with 4 points. On the weekend they lost 3-1 at Reims. Previous results this season, from beginning to latest:

Montpellier 1-1 Toulouse
Lorient 2-1 Montpellier
Montpellier 0-1 Marseille
Sochaux 1-3 Montpellier

I'm very far from an expert on Montpellier and Ligue 1 but I think it would be fair to say that their key player to look out for is Younes Belhanda, the Moroccan playmaker who won Ligue 1's Young Player of the Year award last season. He also won the Goal of the Year award for this outrageous golazo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpUY1ZTmRrw

As for us, we should be looking to leave France with at least a point. No disrespect to Montpellier but they have not started the season well and outside of an Intertoto Cup win in 1999, they are not experienced European campaigners.

I expect to see a few changes from the weekend's game, with Szczesny already ruled out with an ankle injury. Wouldn't be surprised to see Giroud, Koscielny and Santos start, either. Ramsey,Diaby and Walcott would be in with a shout too but you can't make too many changes to a winning team. As of today I would probably go with,

Mannone
Jenkinson - Koscielny - Vermaelen - Santos
Arteta - Coquelin - Cazorla
Gervinho - Giroud - Podolski

... and keep Diaby back for the Man City game. However, I would be tempted with going Ramsey for Coquelin and/or maybe Walcott for Podolski. Not because Podolski deserves to be dropped for Theo but because he started the season not fully up to speed and has been subbed in every game so far. And looking ahead, there are certain players we need to keep healthy throughout the season, and Podolski is one of them.

I'd be ok with a draw here but think we can get a win.

The tricky part is rotating enough without changing the entire starting 11, which we could easily manage with the squad.

For me Ramsey should start and should Walcott.

I know precious little about Montpellier, but I think I'd be disappointed with a draw. We're on a good run of form and have European experience, they are on a bad run of form and are inexperienced at this level. Plus, we just pinched their top scorer.

This would be my preferred line-up:

Mannone
Jenkinson - Mertesacker - Kos - Santos
Arteta - Coquelin - Ramsey
Walcott - Giroud - Podolski

The temptation is to really rotate, but that would be a mistake. I think if we're 2-0 up or so after 60 or 70 minutes we could bring in a few players, in particular take off Poldi and Arteta. I'd bring on, say Arshavin and Ox for those two (not very defensive, I know).

The PL should be the focus at this point, and an away game to a CL debutant where we don't actually have to win, means rotation is prudent.

If I have to make a prediction, I'd say 2-0.

We should win this one. I'd really be disappointed with anything less. My lineup would be
Mannone
Jenkinson Koscielny Vermaelen Santos
Arteta Coquelin Cazorla
Theo Giroud Poldi
And bring Diaby on at the 75th minute. We need him fresh against City.

Agree, it's just difficult to predict where Wenger will make the likely 2-4 rotations. I wouldn't be surprised with Giroud through the middle with Gervinho moving to the left and Theo on the right, with Poldi and Chamberlain dropping to the bench. Kos should definitely come in for whoever is feeling the pinch more out of Mert and Verm. Think Diaby will start and be replaced.

Mannone
Jenkinson Kos Mert/Verm Gibbs
Arteta Diaby Cazorla
Theo Giroud Gervinho

Although looking at that side that's 4 changes in the outfield. Not sure if that's wise but what is exciting this season compared to years gone by is the strength of those 4 changes. Theo, Giroud, Diaby and Kos! That's some fantastic depth. Ideally, Cazorla can come off around 65-70 minute mark, same with Diaby, but that would upset our midfield too much I think.

Montpellier president on Giroud :

"It doesn’t really mean much to me… I saw that he scored 6 goals at the weekend. Oh, it wasn’t him? He must have at least scored 2 or 3, no? I didn’t really pay any attention. Oh right, he was on the bench? When a player leaves the club, I don’t follow what he does. I do really like Olivier though. If Arsenal want to loan him back to us, we’d take him back."

Is that serious? Hope the fans don't feel that way and he gets a good reception. Hope he scores a hat trick.

If the President actually said that then that's him being bitter. Bar Belhanda their main danger is probably Yanga-Mbiwa, a beast of a defender on his day. It'll be interesting to see Giroud up against him considering they know each other fairly well.

I'd like to see rotation and let Koscielny, Ramsey, Theo and Giroud get some game time. Possibly Le Coq on for some part too. But there is a danger of changing too much so have to wait and see what happens. Wenger is banned from this game, isn't he? I think he is. Steve Bould takes charge if so.

It will be:

Mannone

Jenk- per-tv- gibbs
coq-arteta
gerv-giroud-pod

Let's not forget city play Real away, so they won't be resting players too. Play the strongest team now, get the points, then rest.

Geoff Arsenal on twitter (usually very reliable) tweeted saying the line up for tonight will be:

Mannone
Jenks Per TV Gibbs
Arteta Le Coq Cazorla
Gerv Giroud Podolski

Would have liked to see Ramsey start, not that Coq played poorly but it would have been nice for him to ride the confidence he got from playing so well on Saturday.

Walcott and the Ox can come off the bench and make an immediate impact if needed.

He got a 3 match ban for the rant he had at the ref after the AC Milan game....

In other news today...

Brian woolnough chief sports writer for the daily star has died....3 months after Danny fullbrook the chief sports writer died....which I had not herd about...

Tragic....I know I slagged him off in the past....but that's laid to rest..
Must be hard 2 in 3 months...

R.I.P guys.

Official team is:

Mannone
Jenkinson - Mertesacker - Vermaelen - Gibbs
Arteta - Diaby - Cazorla
Gervinho - Giroud - Podolski

Very strong team, and arguably our best lineup at the moment. Hopefully we can get an early lead and take off some players second half.

Yellow card within the first 30 seconds for Diaby.

Really hope Giroud scores so the media shut up about him not scoring yet.
