Olivier Giroud
Al Jazeera reported earlier today that Arsenal had agreed a fee for Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud. Since then, the story has gained a bit of momentum. A lot of other sources have been saying the same thing, and the news is all over Twitter as well. It's thought that the agreed fee is between 12 and 13 million pounds. So, thoughts on this?

I hope he's not another Chamakh

Re: Olivier Giroud
I do have a few reservations about him, but I'm always willing to put faith in Wenger when it comes to attackers. I just hope its a fee + chamakh/park deal. I also hope he is willing to play off the bench, because I think RVP needs to play where he's been playing, and not be moved deeper.
A striker is important right now, whether or not RVP stays, but is Giroud the man? He's come off 1 good season, and while sometimes that works (Kos), sometimes it doesn't. He doesn't seem to have extraordinary technique or creativity, but he's strong, knows where to be, and can finish. Is that enough?

If he knows how to shoot then he's an immediate improvement on Chamakh.

Re: Olivier Giroud
It sounds like Chamakh could be going the other way, but we'll see what happens. All I know is that Wenger's sudden wish to bring in more attacking players worries me in terms of the situation with van Persie. Apparently, Wenger is also looking at Alan Dzagoev and Salomon Rondon.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Montpellier have admitted we are speaking to them.
Hopefully it as back up or to compliment RVP, not replacement.

A striking force of RvP, Podolski, Giroud will be way better than RvP, Chamakh, and Park. Hopefully we get M'Vila as well and I will be looking forward to next season.

Re: Olivier Giroud
If we are trying to sign Giroud for a sizeable fee then I fear the worst for Van Persie, but goodluck to him. We are not going to go into next season playing the way we have been with one through the middle and Podolski, VP and Giroud at the club.

Re: Olivier Giroud
I think it's a good sign with regards to RVP, as it shows him our intent to have as strong a team as possible to challenge for titles, but I'm quite sure we'll see a change in formation now which is a shame considering how deadly Van Persie was last season in his 'middle of the front 3 role'.
Still, I'm sure Wenger has a plan, and if we get M'Vila also, I will be super pumped for next season.

Re: Olivier Giroud
The way I see it...vp is going nowhere the board and Wenger have accepted that a formidable team will be needed if they want to be heading onto the new season as a 'champions' possible elect....if no quality signings were made the press would laugh off and take the piss for some time and the idea of Wenger saying at a press conference..
'I know we signed a player and that's enough with this team and belief to win the league...blah blag blah blah blag'...
It's good that finaly for what ever reasons behind those doors that happend it's being righted....we are signing players that WILL make a difference and not the usual tosh coming in thru the doors eg chamakh and co...
If we get this guy and sign Vila I for one will be chomping at the bit to get the season underway...
Trophy drought??
I think we can kiss that goodbye.....

Re: Olivier Giroud
For three excellent signings (Podolski, Giroud and M'Vila) I could almost accept losing Van Persie.
We're not going to solve our problem of losing players unless we improve and get much closer to winning things. In an ideal world we'd keep all our best player but the club can't have the situation dictated by one player.
The suggestion by the BBC journalist that we'd play three strikers in a front three is ridiculous.

Sounds absolutly blinding to me...including the wide players we could have an attacking line of 5 consisting of
Chamberlain,podolski,vp,giroud,walcott....
Any defence would shit itself at the prospect of playing against that.....
Any...

Re: Olivier Giroud
Firstly, even if he doesn't sign a new deal - we shouldn't sell van Persie this summer.
Secondly, if we do bring in Podolski, Giroud and M'Vila this summer and possibly another couple of players of the same level next summer, I would be able to deal with van Persie leaving the club.
Looking forward to next season already.
On a more serious note, Giroud is a good looking guy - always good from the marketing perspective is he is reasonable successful.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Positive signing for us.
Giroud, Podolski & RVP: all three left footed players.
I think we can see a change in tactics from Wenger. He is 6.3, physical just the kind of player we have been missing for a while. I hope we dont sell RVP.
Great job by management for not waiting until last minute to sign new players.

We might need to leave some places in the team for defenders though...

Lets not forget we also have Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain at the club.

Maybe with one anchor and three in front of him who can drift wide but arent necessarily wingers, then two up front.
----------------M'VILA----------------
--------ARTETA-SONG-WILSHIRE------
---------VAN PERSIE-PODOLSKI--------
I like that, especially when you think you also have Walcott, Gervinho, Chamblerlain, Ramsey, Diaby, Giroud and Rosicky vying for places.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Would still be surprised to see a change in formation.
Will take Giroud a few months to get used to the premiership and can't expect van Persie to stay fit through-out the season either.

Re: Olivier Giroud
I'm still not convinced by this, but let's see. If we're looking at a front 3 of:
Podolski - RVP - Giroud
(which is what I've heard)
Then it's strange - can Giroud operate wide right? Would RVP start where he has been, or would he operate on the left instead? And if Giroud is left footed, that's a front three of left footers. Would that work?
I think we'd see a lot of rotation, which is good.

Giroud is strictly a poacher and isn't particularly fast neither, so I cannot see him on the right side.
