Podolski has been excellent covering for Lahm though. Not letting them get exposed to any counters.

He's doing a job for the team. Germany are keeping their powder dry, no need to do more than need to in the group stage.

Given the organisation of the Germans, it was a beauty. Something from nothing, and powerful enough to beat the colossal Neuer.

The Netherlands need to throw on Alexander Song if they want another goal from van Persie.

In the end the Netherlands really stunk the place out at this tournament. I'm not sure they were much better at the world cup but they certainly had more luck in that one. Brazil's own goal and Melo's moment of stupidity come to mind.

They are a true split team. When they were chasing a goal their defence and attack were so far apart, all the clearing headers fell to German midfielders. It seems that the Dutch players are either non-footballers at the back or self-proclaimed luxury players that either don't want to or don't have the nous to do the hard work required.

There's obviously the usual problems between team-mates as well. The Germans barely had to play very well to win, they were operating well within their potential. In the end that makes them a bit boring but given the fact that they are in with a chance of winning the whole thing it won't matter to them.

Nice goal by RvP but he had a very strange tournament too.

Haha brilliant. The Dutch are not out of it yet, by the way. A convincing win against Portugal along with a convincing with for the Germans against Denmark (convincing win = 2 goal margins), and the Dutch are through.

for some reason i really want denmark to go through... don't know, just would be nice to have the underdogs making it to the quarters dispite being in the arguably hardest group.

RVP could be distracted by the mess of no contract extention at Arsenal?

And Bendtner scoring goals will only mean one thing, a bigger transfer fee!!!

If it's anything like Nasri he's distracted by a future that doesn't concern Arsenal!

There was so much praise towards Arshavin after the first game and a half with people questioning Arsenal and what we did to him. But when he comes up against good, disciplined teams who offer no space in the final 3rd he fades out of the game too much. I still thought he made the good odd pass (like he did at Arsenal) but nowhere near enough.

Russia as a whole had nothing once they went behind, Greece should have won 2/3-0 and controlled the whole 2nd half, but as captain and the main creative outlet you expect more from him to lead the team but he didn't offer much. But as a team they were so flat.

Arshavin worked as a short-term signing but that 2007-2009 period just looks like a peak in his overwise less stellar career.

I think his lack of physical form could be excused if he was regularly decisive in matches. The purity with which he struck the ball for those early goals at Anfield and Old Trafford disappeared. A foot injury might have excused this at first but afterwards there was just unexcusable pathetic form.

For me the low point was Leeds in the FA Cup at home in 2011. If he didn't understand why he was getting booed then he is an idiot. I would genuinely rather have Gervinho with his crisis of confidence in his shooting, but who works hard rather than Arshavin. Hopefully we can get a few million for him.

RVP had a stinker, didn't see enough of the ball but when he did(towards the end) he wasn't very good. But knowing him he probably just needs a little time off from the field to get back to his best.

Podolski scored.

Bendtner has been fined 100k Euros and banned for 1 competitive game for displaying sponsored pants in celebration.

UEFA sure do have their priorities right.
