Nicklas Bendtner Empty Nicklas Bendtner

Post by Mike York Thu Sep 26, 2013 8:29 pm

Seeing as he is with us again for now and usually appears in the headlines for different reasons Shocked

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said Nicklas Bendtner can regain a regular place in the Gunners first team, ESPN has reported, after the Denmark international impressed on his return to action for the club.

Bendtner had been absent from the Arsenal XI for more than two years until he started against West Brom in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening, having had loan spells at Sunderland and Juventus in that time. But after Bendtner claimed an assist for Thomas Eisfeld’s opening goal, Wenger believes the 25-year-old can return to the first team reckoning.

“Nicklas overall had a good game for a guy who has not played for so long,” Wenger said after the 1-1 draw, won on penalties by Arsenal. “He did very well on his own up front for nearly two hours. He showed heart and he has quality to come back as well.

“I don't question too much his confidence. For Bendtner the most important thing is to stay fit physically because he has the talent,” Wenger added. “I know him well. It's important he is consistently present and works hard. He has top qualities.”

Bendtner has 43 goals for Arsenal to his name, from 158 appearances, but had not started under Wenger since a goalless draw with Sunderland in March 2011. His last goals for the club also came in March 2011, a hat-trick in an FA Cup replay with Leyton Orient.

Nicklas Bendtner Empty Re: Nicklas Bendtner

Post by Mike York Thu Sep 26, 2013 8:31 pm

Nicklas Bendtner returned to Arsenal starting 11 for the first time in more than two years yesterday, and the big Dane did justice to his inclusion. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger picked him as lone striker for the Gunners’ away trip to West Bromwich Albion in the Capital One Cup tie. The Denmark striker bagged an assist in the regular time and scored a penalty in the penalty shoot-outs, earning the Gunners a place in the next round where they face Chelsea.

Bendtner has had a tough time in the last couple of years. He was sent on loan for two successive seasons and it became clear that his future lies away from Arsenal. But, Wenger decided to keep him in the squad after failing to land any major striker in the summer. Bendtner reflected on his return as “very emotional” and posted a picture of him with skipper Thomas Vermaelen, with a message written: “Very emotional return, but what better way than with a win! Fans was absolutely incredible throughout the game and help us in difficult periods. For myself I was very moved by my reception and hearing my song again made my heart skip! Young players did ever so well and kept there cool in difficult penalty shootout. Respect! Skipper looking fresh!”

Am I wrong in being a little bored by all the Bendtner chatter this week?

I've heard it all before and personally speaking, would rather have seen Akpom start last night.

I have been saying I would prefer to see Akpom. I thought he did well on tour, and had been regularly training and playing in comparison to Bendtner.

Then I realised he is only 17! Plenty of time for him, and trust Wenger to bring him in when required.

For Bendtner, Wenger just needs to give him enough game time so if we do call upon him, he is sharp enough and knows the team and systems well enough to contribute.

We definitely don't want to be throwing Akpom in there in a UCL tie in March when there is a lot of pressure.

Thing is, we know very well how effective Bendtner can be in the league, even in big games. He has the experience and all he needs now is game time, Wenger knows that and I would also always go for the same option over a promising youngster with no experience.

Giroud is obviously first choice, but Bendtner can get very close to his level imo, and we most definitely need that backup.

In terms of him being a youngster with good prospects and Bendtner having wanted to leave etc I wouldn't have minded Akpom starting. But I think Wenger made the right call. Bendtner has the experience over Akpom and can hold the ball up well, his ability is more matched to Giroud from what I have seen so it fitted the style we play. Playing him from the start then having Akpom come on later to run at tired defenders seems logical.

And like ArseHenry said we need back-up for Ggiroud and love him or hate him, I trust Bendtner to get more goals in the league than Akpom at the moment.

I completely disagree I don't think Bendtner can get "very close" to Giroud's level at all. In my opinion Giroud is ALOT better.

He is ALOT better now, yes. IMO, that is only because Bendtner hasn't had game time, he will do better and can be very good.

I have to side with Jenks on this one. While they are similar physically, Giroud is much more intelligent. His movement and play with teammates really helps the team, where as Bendtner's movement and interplay is a bumbling mess.

Come now guys, that's at the moment, he has not played in quite a long time. For me though, he still produced some magic and awareness during the West Brom game, and from his better days at Arsenal we saw some super stuff on the left and right wing as well as CF positioning. He most definitely can get back to his best.

He's not as good as Giroud, but he can be a reliable back up if he sorts his head out(which he seems to have done). At least till January, as he's by no means in our future plans. He'll stay at the club till we can sign a 'top' striker, and hence we'll have to agree to the symbiotic relation with him till then.

Also, he needs to play more and consistently to make buying clubs convinced that he's worth the salary they'll need to pay for him. And that can only happen if he puts in solid performances. Hence, as things stand, he needs us more than we need him. It should play into our hands.

I can understand him not getting much game time at Juve as they have several good strikers.

But what do you make of his time at Sunderland? 25 games for 8 goals and 5 assists. He scored a couple of important goals, and it was in a low scoring Sunderland side. But if he really has the talent, shouldn't he have done better? I don't really remember if he got to play striker and how he was supported.

Sad but true, RVP could have been lethal in front of our current defense/*midfield. But time passes by, and we have a new signing in front of whom literally any player can score a goal. And with the quality of Giroud's overall game, we'll see 13-14 players score goals. If Giroud can score 20+, we have a great chance this season. Absolutely loving our current midfield right now!

Jonathan, I think not bad considering what you say, Sunderland are a low scoring side and for me that is a relatively good return. Look at Wilshere for Bolton, different position and job, but still: 14 games, 1 goal & 1 assist(had a "very good season" there). Bendtner 30 games for Sunderland with 5 assists, not bad for a team on a similar level.

I feel Bendtner could also finish very well with the providers we have, and probably a better finisher with his head, dare I say, than Giroud.

Nicklas Bendtner Empty Re: Nicklas Bendtner

Post by Mike York Wed Nov 13, 2013 10:40 pm

On Saturday night the Danish paper Berlingske published an exclusive – and it must be said brilliant – interview with Nicklas Bendtner. It was the first time in six months the Arsenal player had spoken properly about events such as when he was arrested for drink-driving, when his mother was diagnosed with cancer and, according to the striker, Arsène Wenger told him that he could not leave Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

The interview was aimed at the Danish public the weekend before the international break – and not, as it appeared in England, on the eve of Arsenal's game against Manchester United. Bendtner wanted to give his version of events to the Danish public but this, alas, is not how it works these days.

Within minutes of the interview, by Thomas Conradsen, being published at 8pm Danish time, the quotes about how he had wanted to leave Arsenal on transfer deadline day had been translated to English and were spreading like wildfire on Twitter. And with that the abuse started.

This is a an example of the tweets that was sent to Bendtner's personal Twitter account within a 38-second period on Saturday night:

"You sure now how to piss in your own cup" – from @AFChound

"Get the Fuck out of our club" – from @EoinAFC

"You're so shit" – from @Aria_Payne1

Piers Morgan also got in on the act, tweeting: "As for Bendtner.... his 'disappointment' at having to continue playing for #Afc is comfortably exceeded by my sickening revulsion."

So why was the 25-year-old Dane worthy of such vitriol? This is what he said about what happened on transfer deadline day: "Everything was in place for me, there were three clubs that were just waiting for me to say 'yes please' to them. I was very disappointed when he [Wenger] phoned because I was ready to move on. I didn't actually think that they wished to keep me.

"As I have been at the club since I was 16 I found it ridiculous that they [had] placed me in the reserves and let me train on my own. [But] suddenly everything was like old times again. I was training with the first team, I was hanging out with the first team and I had a dietician again. From being completely out to being completely in again."

And that was that. A player wanting to leave a club where he thought he had no future and no chance of playing because he had been relegated to the reserves. I can think of bigger crimes. There was one quote in the interview that understandably irked Arsenal fans: "I am training far more seriously [now] than I have ever done in Arsenal. I am in the process of building myself up so that I become this strong machine, this perfect product to sell. I want to start as strongly as possibly in my next club."

It was a naive thing for Bendtner to say and Arsenal supporters, rightly, commented that, if he has been at the club for eight years, then maybe he should have tried a little bit harder before this season. But if anyone read the whole interview a different, more rounded, picture would emerge. The impression I got from reading the interview in its entirety was of a footballer who had been genuinely excited about turning a new leaf and to kickstart a career that had come to a standstill. He is still only 25, remember.

At the Guardian we also just used the sections from the interview that touched upon Arsenal. We published an article early on Sunday with the headline: "Nicklas Bendtner: 'I was disappointed I was told I was staying at Arsenal'"

In the full interview Bendtner, however, also talked about his mother's illness and the joys of being a father. When reading his thoughts on those subjects, the perception of Bendtner as a person changes.

He said: "In my family we are very close and when I was young we shared everything. In an essence by parents were my best friends. The thought that my mum could die was one I wasn't ready to have. I said that in that moment [when he was told his mum was suffering from cancer] and thought about how life would be without her. That would not have been a good place to be.

"To my mum's big credit she was just so calm. Much tougher than I had thought. It made it easier for me to deal with the disease. Instead of being a victim, she took everything as it came. A true fighter. It makes me proud."

Bendtner's mother had chemotherapy and two operations and on 2 March came the news that the cancer had gone away. That, however, was also the night Bendtner was caught drink-driving. "It was completely irresponsible for me to drive with too much alcohol in my body. There is nothing else to say. And the stupid thing was that my friend and I were only going 100 yards down the road. But I was so pleased and happy on my mum's behalf, that I felt invincible at the moment."

Make no mistake, getting in a car drunk is utterly, utterly indefensible. He could have killed someone. Himself, his friend or a completely innocent bystander.

The Dane also talks about being a father to Nicholas, who is almost three years old now. Bendtner is no longer together with Nicholas's mother, Caroline Fleming, and sees him only every other weekend and once a week. "The time I have with him is the time I prioritise the most in my whole life. It hurts every time I have to leave him. And it does him too. I can see that in the way he looks at me when we wave goodbye. I cried when he said he loved me and I never cry. But being a father gives me something I don't get anywhere else."

There is never (or rarely) one side to a story. Bendtner, from a footballing point of view, is not a bad person. He has not let Arsenal down. He has not sat on the bench, just picking up money in a Winston Bogarde-esque way. He is not a shit footballer, like so many people like to say, including @Aria_Payne1. If he were shit he would not score two goals in one game against Italy. He may not be as good as Mesut Özil but that is not his fault.

Finally, a few things to consider:

• Why did Arsenal put someone who has been at the club for eight years in the reserves, if that was the case? Did he not at least deserve to train with the first team? No wonder he wanted to leave

• Why, if Arsenal did really want to sell him, did they not secure a replacement for him before the transfer deadline day? They had had a whole summer to do so.

• The interview was conducted on 29 October, the day after he had been booed by some of his own fans during the Capital One Cup game against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium? Bendtner himself had nothing to do with the publication date.

• Has there been any indication that Bendtner has not done his best for Arsenal every time he has been given a chance this season?

• Does any footballer deserve such abuse for saying that it would probably have been better if he had left the club last summer?

Clearly, any right-minded person would answer no to the last question. So maybe it is time for the section of Arsenal supporters who abused him last weekend and booed him against Chelsea and have made fun of him for a long time to actually get behind him as long as he plays for the club and then, when he leaves in January or June, wish him well at his new club.

But that is probably too much to ask.

^ top article. Puts a new light on Bendtner. I think he needs a fresh chance. He's never going to be as good as he thinks, but if he puts in some hard work, he can be a great back up striker ala Dzeko. And with Poldi and Walcott back, he'll start to realise there's some work to be done to get into the current Arsenal forward line.

I don't hold a grudge against him.

Actually, many of his quotes have been taken out of context.

But I think for his sake, he needs to change clubs. Not that Sunderland or Juventus really helped him.

The picture above of Nicklas Bendtner has gone viral.

Taken during Arsenal’s Capital One Cup penalty shoot-out win at West Brom, Bendtner looks as if he is heading into the post.

In recent hours the picture of Bendtner has been added to Reddit and endlessly photoshopped on the viral sharing site.

Nicklas Bendtner has issued an apology after being arrested on suspicion of criminal damage at his apartment block.

The 25-year-old Arsenal forward was cautioned by police in Hertfordshire on Monday in connection with damage to an apartment building where he lives in the Bushey area.

In a statement, Hertfordshire police said: “A 25-year-old man from Bushey has been cautioned for criminal damage and is no longer in custody. He was arrested in connection with an incident which occurred at an address in The Avenue, Bushey, in the early hours of 24 November.”

Bendtner later issued an apology on his Instagram account: “On Saturday night after our win against Southampton I went out with my family and friends for dinner.

“After our dinner we all wanted a night swim in my gym so we changed to shorts and brought towels down. As we arrived at the gym my key fob changed the colour from red (locked) to green (open) but the door remained closed. We thought the door was stuck so we tried to open it and it caused some damage.

“I apologise for any inconvenience for my neighbours and I have paid in full. We had no part in damaging anything else in the building. The matter is closed with the police and my focus is on [Tuesday night's] match [against Marseille].”
