Re: Fabrice Muamba
Are there any worries that he might have brain damage or anything like that seeing as his heart stopped for so long?

It's hard to say without knowing the details, but seeing as his heart stopped for significant periods of time, and that he did not breath, I fear he does have significant brain damage in addition to damage to other tissues in the body. That can explain why he remains in critical condition even after normal heart rhythm has been restored.
It is a possibility that he will remain in vegetative state... But again, I don't know as I have no specific details of what happened, it's only assumptions.
All we can do is hope that he survives this and pushes on.

Re: Fabrice Muamba
Yeah, at the moment all anyone is hoping for is that he survives. His footballing career is over, but that is completely irrelevant

From what I can gather he had a cardiac arrest that kicked off a heart attack from a non specific and non previously picked up heart defect
His heart according to reports stopped 4 times....
It would be to early to tell if and what damage has been done,
But the one thing he had good going for him is the instant medical attention
A heart attack victim has if any chance of survival needs attention within the first 10 minutes which he had...

Re: Fabrice Muamba
Just reading about his chances of making a recovery...it's not looking good for him,
Sounds like the damage has been done....
A medical reporter quoted this:
FABRICE Muamba will need a miracle to survive, doctors warned last night.
Figures show just five per cent of people who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital live. This goes up to around 17 per cent if the patient is given defribillation within minutes of the arrest.
But of those who survive around 95 per cent suffer brain damage — caused when the brain is starved of oxygen.
US figures show only three to seven per cent of people who suffer cardiac arrest are able to return to their previous level of functioning.
From the moment he collapsed medics faced a battle to keep his key organs working. Sudden cardiac arrests kill 250 people a day in the UK.
Paramedics could not get Muamba's heart beating on its own for almost two hours.
Dr Graham Stuart, medical director of Sports Cardiology UK, said: "At that stage the support is critical and the speed of treatment is vital. Any delay can damage various organs.
"Usually the reason for this happening is something to do with a heart muscle problem or weakness. The medical teams were there straight away which is very important. That would significantly help his recovery hopes."

Re: Fabrice Muamba
This released a few moments ago....
Fabrice Muamba's heart condition is "showing small signs of improvement" following his cardiac arrest.
A Bolton statement said: "His heart is now beating without the help of medication and he is also moving his arms and legs.
"However, his long-term prognosis will remain unclear for some time.
"He is still critically ill and will continue to be closely monitored and treated by staff in The London Chest Hospital's intensive care unit."
